Awarded the Doc Lab Award for Digital Storytelling in 2018, 1 the Road is the first true book written by an AI. Ross Goodwin, the creator of the artificial intelligence, equipped a Cadillac with a surveillance camera, GPS, microphone, and a clock connected to the AI. Traveling from New York to New Orleans, this setup allowed the AI to produce a manuscript line by line, printed on long scrolls of receipt paper that filled the car’s back seats. The book’s editorial design is based on a graphic adaptation of these original scrolls.
